It seems to be the day for things that were bound to happen. I’ve only just reported that Space Invaders is being set up for a movie version, and now Variety says that Warner is planning a film based on the classic 60s series Gilligan’s Island.
Despite the failure of Land Of The Lost, the studio still thinks it’s a good idea to adapt the old TV show, with Arrested Development writer Brad Copeland and Dark Knight producer Charles Roven in charge of bringing it to the silver screen.
Gilligan’s Island never really caught on in the UK, but it was a kind of Lost from a time when TV was much sweeter and nicer, with seven people stranded on a desert island after they get shipwrecked, desperately trying to get home (the show is known for having an endless parade of guest stars who managed to make it to the island, yet never seemed to be able to rescue the stranded septet). Although the show only lasted three seasons, it’s lived on in the US due to endless repeats.
The new film will update the story to the modern day, but there’s other news on exactly what changes there will be to the original concept (maybe a polar bear and a smoke monster?). Copeland will now write the script, with Warner seeking out a director and actors once they have the screenplay.
