With Tim Burton’s Alice In Wonderland getting released on Friday, the BFI has been promoting its restored version of the very first time the story made it to the screen, as a 10-minute one-reel short in 1903. Despite the restoration, some of Cecil Hepworth and Percy Stow’s film is invitably still pretty degraded (and four minutes have disappeared completely), but it’s still very impressive for a movie that’s 107-years-old, especially considering the amount of suprisingly nifty special effects they managed less than a decade after the artform was invented. It’s great to see such care being taken with films that are in danger of being lost forever, so click below to take a look at the 1903 short.
