I’m feeling a bit like a trailblazer at the moment when it comes to Birdemic, as I was pointing out how unbelievably awful, in a I’m-not-sure-whether-this-is-an-elaborate-hoax way, it looked months ago. And now, in the past few days, much of the rest of the internet seems to have caught up. Unfortunately I can’t claim credit for this, as it’s the fact that Severin films recently picked up the movie for a tongue-in-cheek US release that’s caused most of the interest (after director James Nguyen drove around the Sundance Film Festival in a truck covered in dead birds).
Then trendy mags like Vice picked up on it (calling it the ‘New Best Worst Movie Ever’) and comedians such as Patton Oswalt have been showing it to everyone they can think of, just because they can’t believe it exists. If you’re wondering whether I’m just being hyperbolic, take a look at the new trailer below to see some truly shocking effects and acting, although for the full jaw-agape awfulness of what happens when you try to use clip art instead of special effects, take a look at the older trailer. It’s already drawing comparisons to films of such legendary badness as Troll 2 and The Room, which suggests it really is as bad as it looks.
So come on then, when’s this coming to the UK? We need to start a campaign!
