Seeing as she died in the first film, you wouldn’t think it would matter if Angelina Jolie was going to appear in Wanted 2 or not, but it seems Universal is only interested in the follow-up with her attached. In fact it’s one of the reasons its taken so long to decide whether to make a sequel or not, because while Jolie has been attached to the film, Universal didn’t want to go full steam ahead preparing a follow-up in case she dropped out.
Well, according to Vulture, Jolie’s now decided against Wanted 2, which pretty much kills the sequel, as the studio doesn’t seem to think people care about James McAvoy enough, and apparently there’s no other woman Universal can think of to play the part.
So what’s Jolie turned it down in favour of? Well, she’s going off to make Gravity instead, a project she’s long been attached to, but which was also having trouble getting off the ground at Universal. Then, a few weeks ago, the studio put the film into turnaround, Warner picked it up and is planning to put it into production fairly soon. That’s great news, as it’ll be the frist directorial project for Alfonso Cuaron since the excellent Children Of Men, and is based on a script he wrote with his son, Jonas.
In the film “Jolie would be alone on-screen for much of the movie, playing the sole surviving human member of a space mission, desperately trying to return home to Earth and her daughter”. Although that’s not a lot of info to go, quite frankly anything Cuaron wants to do is fine by me, and if he he wants to do it with Jolie, all the better, even if that does mean the end of Wanted 2.
