There’s been talk for quite a while about bringing The Flash to the big screen once more. Now that Warner has merged with DC, plans are afoot for Batman 3 and another Superman movie, while Green Lantern is about to go into production, and it looks like the studio is now moving forward with a film about the lightning fast superhero.
A new story has appeared over at IESB.net, which reveals the man at the top of Warner’s list of potential directors for the movie, and it seems the man they want is Greg Berlanti. He wrote the screenplay for Green Lantern, and they must have liked what he’s done if they’re lining him up The Flash. Although primarily known as a TV writer/producer, working on series such as Dawson’s Creek, Brothers & Sisters and Eli Stone, Berlanti does have directing experience, making The Broken Hearts Club in 2000, as well as Life As We Know It, starring Katherine Heigl and Josh Duhamel, which comes out at the end of the year. He was also signed to direct Green Lantern for a while, before passing the reins on to Martin Campbell.
Hopefully Berlanti will have a bit more luck than others have had with The Flash in recent years. Both David Dobkin and Shawn Levy have tried to bring the character back to the screen and failed. Indeed The Flash’s only live action appearance in recent years is in a few episodes of Smallville (played by Kyle Gallner). However, the whole idea of merging Warner and DC was to give more momentum to potential DC superhero movies, most of which have been struggling in development for years while Marvel went out and turned all its major characters into movie stars, so this time around The Flash may well get out of the starting blocks.
