Nic Cage seems to like playing CG characters. Just in the last 12 months he was virtually unreconisable as the voice of the mole, Speckles, in G-Force, as well as taking a role in Astro Boy. That’s not to mention his previous work on The Ant Bully and Christmas Carol: The Movie. Now Variety reports that he’s been lined up by Dreamworks Animation to play a caveman in The Croods, alongside animation newbie, Ryan Reynolds.
Cage will play caveman Crug, who has to take his family out into a strange and unfamiliar world when an earthquake destroys their home. Along the way they meet up with Reynold’s nomadic character, who charms Crug’s clan with his seemingly modern-minded way, although Crug himself isn’t so sure.
Space Chimps helmer Kirk DeMicco is sharing directing duties with Lilo & Stitch’s Chris Sanders (who also co-directed the imminent How To Train Your Dragon). Interestingly, The Croods first started life as part of the deal Dreamworks Animation had with Aardman, but following the lack of success of Flushed Away and Curse Of The Were-Rabbit, the deal was cancelled, but Dreamworks kept developing The Croods, and now plans to have it in cinemas on March 30th, 2012.
