Sorry this didn’t go up yesterday, but we were having some major technical difficulties until late last night. However, it’s been a good weekend for Martin Scorsese, who scored by far the biggest opening of his career, with Shutter Island taking $40.2 million in its first three days in the US. That’s far ahead of Scorsese previous best, The Departed, which made $26 million in its first weekend.
Shutter Island benefitted from having no other major new releases opening opposite it, and far exceeded most box office watcher’s expectations, who’d thought the Leonardo DiCaprio thriller would have been hurt by some rather middling reviews.
The rest of the box office top 10 was made up of holdovers from previous weeks, with most films grosses dropping significantly from last weekend’s Presidents Day holiday. However while both Valentine’s Day and Percy Jackson had okay second weekends, Universal will undoubtedly be disappointed that The Wolfman has already dropped to making than $10 million, suggesting they’re not getting the word of mouth they need to keep audiences coming back.
Take a look below for the full US top 10 for the weekend of February 19th-21st.
