Normally when there’s film news about Madonna, it sends people into a panic because she’s once more trying to act, which so far has never proved to be a good idea. However this time she’s turning director for a biopic about the infamous affair between Edward VII and the divorcee, Wallis Simpson, which led to his abdication so that he could marry her.
It’s not Madonna’s first directorial effort, as she made the peculiar and little seens Filth and Wisdom in 2008, which she also wrote. Despite that film not being well received, when you’re Madonna that doesn’t matter and you still get to make more movies. And by taking on British royalty, it shows that even though she’s now divorced from Guy Ritchie, her love of all things Blightly continues unabashed.
According to Variety, Up In The Air star Vera Farmiga is eying the role of Wallis Simpson, while nobody has yet been announced for the role of Edward.
The royal scandal is a perennially interesting subject, simply because it’s a great love story, however the Royal Family have had problems with previous takes on the tale because they feel they concentrated on how Edward had to battle for his freedom, at the expense of looking at what he did to his family and country. It’ll be interesting to see where Madge takes it.
