The 1982 film version of The Best Little Whorehouse In Texas, starring Dolly Parton and Burt Reynolds, wasn’t a massive hit, but Universal has decided there’s a good enough idea there for a remake. As a result, they’ve hired the writing team behind the likes of Legally Blonde, The House Bunny and The Ugly Truth, Karen McCullah Lutz and Kirsten Smith, to come up with a new version.
The original tells the partially true story of the madame of a Texan whorehouse (which is called the Chicken Ranch), and a local sherriff, who team up to stop a crusading local TV reporter from shutting the establishment down. The film used many of the songs from the 1978 Broadway version and a couple new ones written by Dolly Parton, but so far the studio hasn’t said whether they’ll be using the original tunes or not in the remake, although it will have musical numbers.
Variety describes it as a complete overhaul, which probably means that it’ll be rewritten to ensure someone like Katherine Heigl can have the starring role (although thinking about it, Queen Latifah might be a good bet for role of the madame) .To be honest, I think they should just bring Dolly back, as she’s always fun.
