To be honest, after Enchanted grossed over $340 million around the world in 2007, I’m surprised it’s taken Disney this long to get around to putting a sequel together, but now they are. Variety reports that Jessie Nelson has been hired to write the script, with Anne Fletcher directing.
Fletcher would seem a good choice, as although she’s best known for making movies like 27 Dresses and The Proposal, she started out as a choreographer, which certainly bodes well for Enchanted’s mix of musical numbers, rom com and fairy tale elements.
As yet though, none of the stars of the first film are attached to the sequel, although Disney is likely to try and bring bank to likes of Amy Adams, Patrick Dempsey and James Marsden. There’s no news either on where the new movie might take the story of Giselle, who in the original was banished from her animated fairy tale world and ended up on the live action streets of New York. Enchanted was a great riff on the classic Disney fairy tale themes, and a far better and smarter movie that you might have expected, so hopefully they’ll be able to retain that in the follow-up.
Disney wants the Enchanted sequel in cinemas next year, but as the first film lingered for years in development hell, it may take a little longer than that. At least this time they’ve got a template to work from though.
