In what may be the least surprising news in history – considering Avatar’s box office success and that James Cameron has already said he has ideas for parts 2 and 3 – Fox have confirmed that early talks are underway for Avatar sequels. However don’t get too excited, as we might have to wait a while.
During a quarterly earnings call, Fox chairman and CEO Rupert Murdoch confirmed that in terms of an Avatar sequel, “We will be pushing for one.” (Well, duh!) He also told people not to “hold your breath for an early one”. The reason for that isn’t just because Cameron always takes a while to make his movies (which shouldn’t be as big a problem for an Avatar sequel, as much of the world-building is already done), but that the director has said that he wants to make The Dive and/or Battle Angel first.
So yep, Avatar 2 & 3 will be coming, but not for a few years yet.
As for the Avatar DVD, Murdoch was again reticent to give specifics, probably because he doesn’t know. He said that the DVD will be out before the end of June, but of course, with the film still topping the box office, Fox is unlikely to want to set a specific date until they know it’s run out of steam at cinemas. Murdoch also confirmed that the initial DVD and Blu-ray release of Avatar won’t be in 3D, despite the fact the 3D Blu-ray should have launched by then. That in itself suggests that plans are already afoot for a 3D double-dip later on. (Source: THR)
