After Avatar, every movie will be set in space, even romances. Well, perhaps not all movies, but Morgan Creek is lining up a spacecraft set love story with Keanu Reeves in the lead role. Variety reports that the Italian director of Seven Pounds and The Pursuit Of Happyness, Gabriele Muccino, is in advanced negotiations to helm the movie.
The film, Passengers, is set in the future on a spaceship that is making a centuries long interstellar voyage to a new planet. Whilst everyone is supposed to be in cryosleep, a glitch causes a single person (Reeves) to wake up years before everyone else. However, realising that this will mean he’s going to die alone, he wakes up a beautiful woman so he can have some company.
Although that sounds like a lot more Keanu Reeves than any movie should have, it does seem a promising premise. That said, it’s a bit mean to wake somebody else up just so you won’t be lonely while waiting to die, if it means both of you will have to live out a pointless existence where ypu can’t complete your mission. And what if you were the women with only Keanu Reeves for company? What sort of cruel twist of fate would that be?
Passengers is based on a script by Jon Spaihts, although there’s no news on when it might go into production.
