I’m not sure if this is really news or not, but what the hell, let’s report it anyway. Marketsaw says that they’ve got word that Gremlins 3 is in the very early stages of development and that it’ll be in 3D. The reason I’m not sure whether this is news is that it doesn’t really tell us an awful lot more than we already knew, other than perhaps making things a tiny bit more official and throwing the almost inevitable 3D into the ring.
As early as 2006, Joe Dante was talking about how Warner was mulling over a new Gremlins flick, something he repeated only a few months ago during a press event for his upcoming 3D flick, The Hole. He also said it was unlikely he’d be returning as director, because the studio probably wouldn’t even ask him.
The only real new info is that if Gremlins 3 does emerge, it’s likely to be in 3D. However that can’t exactly be counted as a surprise, as in this day and age, of course the studio would want to do a movie like Gremlins 3 in 3D.
If the movie does come though, let’s hope it retains at least some of the puppety goodness of the originals, although I’d imagine it’s more likely to be a big CG-fest.
No matter what”s really going on with Gremlins, it seem any plans for another sequel are in the very early stages, so we’ll have to wait to see whether Warner decides to move forward. That said, with many studios looking at which franchises they could revive to take advantage of 3D, Gremlins would seem a good bet.
