A while ago there were rumours that Warner was thinking about converting its upcoming Clash Of The Titans remake to 3D, but at the time it sounded purely like speculation based on the fact that every big film now has to be rumoured for a three-dimenional overhaul at some point, and there seems little time to do it if the studio still wants to hits its March 26th release date.
However it now appears the studio really is toying with the ideas and has ordered 3D tests of some of the CLash Of The Titans footage to see if it’s worthwhile. THR reports that they’ll make a decision in the next 10 days as to whether to convert the entire movie, and it seems they think they can do this and still hit the March release date (which does seem incredibly quick, as other films have been put back by months when they decided to go three-dimensional).
It just goes to show the growing importance of 3D, and Hollywood’s increasing worry that if they don’t bring out a major tentpole release in 3D, audiences won’t think it’s as major a movie as the ones they do, hurting its box office (whether that’s rational or not, it does appear that the thinking now is not just that major 3D films gross more, but that 2D ones will start to make less money as audiences come to expect three-dimensions for blockbuster releases). While the likes of Avatar were filmed in 3D from the start, Titans would use a process that takes a two-dimensional image and gives it depth.
However the big question is whether there are enough 3D screens for Titans, as currently Dreamworks movie How To train Your Dragon is due out on the same day. It was expected that movie would hoover up all the 3D screen, but Warner seems confident they could find enough for their film to make it worthwhile (although I wouldn’t be surprised if that because they’ve got a change in release date planned if they do decide to convert to 3D).
