In order to get the best release dates possible, it’s amazing how far ahead studios try and snap up a good weekend to bring out a movie. As a result Paramount has already set a tentative release date for the second part in the revamped Star Trek movie series.
Comingsoon reports that the studio has pencilled in June 29, 2012 for Star Trek 2 in the US, although its likely to appear over here at the same time. Although some had hoped we’d get the film in 2011, it hasn’t even officially gone into pre-production yet, and so 2012 was always the most realistic time for a sequel.
You can certainly see why Paramount would want to lay claims to that weekend, as it comes just before the very lucrative July 4th holiday in the US. At the moment it’s expected that things will really start to gear up on the sequel later this year, with Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman writing the script and JJ Abrams back directing. Filming should then take place next year, with the film coming out 2012.
