Daily Shorts: All Today’s Smaller Movie News – New Mamet script bought, Oscar-winning actress Jennifer Jones Dies, new Kick-Ass Poster and more…

18th December 2009 By Tim Isaac

So we can cover as many films as possible, we thought we’d give you these quick updates on some of today’s smaller film announcements…

A couple of months ago it was reported that David Mamet was working on a new version of The Diary Of Anne Frank, before that project was quickly kicked into touch after Disney realised it had morphed from a straight retelling into the a film about modern day terrorism and anti-semitism. However all is not lost, as Glengarry Glen Ross writer Mamet has just sold his new script, Come Back To Sorrento, to Firefly and Bla Bla Bla Productions. The film will be directed by Michael Worth and concerns a music  teacher who finds more than he expected when he travels to a small town in Ohio and comes to love a housewife seeking a long-forgotten dream. Felicity Huffman, William H. Macy and Rebecca Pidgeon are in talks to star. (Source: THR)

Jennifer Jones may not be that well remembered today, but she’s a five-time Oscar nominee, who won the award for The Song Of Bernadette. However the classic 40s and 50s actress has now passed away at the age of 90. Jones was turned into a star by Gone With The Wind producer David O’Selznick, who later became her husband. Bernadette was her first major role, and after winning the Oscar it turned her into a big star, who appeared in the likes of Duel In The Sun, Ruby Gentry, Love Is A Many Splendored Thing and A Farewell To Arms. However she acted less and less after the late 50s, particularly following the death of Selznick and a later suicide attempt, with her final role coming in 1974’s The Towering Inferno. Jones died of natural causes at her home in Malibu. (Source: Variety)

Screen Australia has announced its latest round of funding, which includes money for a 3D shark film called bait, about a tsunami that overwhelms a town and brings with it a pack of sharks. Cool, where do I get my ticket? The film will be directed by Aussie native Russell Mulcahy, who’s best known for the likes of Highlander and Resident Evil: Extinction, although it’s probably his cult classic Razorback, about pigs on the rampage in the Outback, that’s closest to Bait. It’s been rumoured that The Hangover 2 will take the gang to Thailand. While nothing’s been made official, Chud reports that those close to the production say the sequel will take the gang to Asia for another insane adventure. As this is said to be the same setting that Hangover director Todd Phillips planned for and Old School sequel, it could be that he’s planning to recycle parts of that script for a new Hangover adventure. The latest in a new series of character posters for Kick-ass has been revealed, this one showing the young vigilante, Hit Girl. Take a look below. (Source: IGN)
