Right, that’s it, I’m going to stop writing about movies and go off and write a novel for teenage girls with a vaguely supernatural theme, because as long as it has even the vaguest parallels to Twilight, Hollywood will buy it. We must be onto the 1,000th or so teen fantasy that’s someone in the film biz has bought the screen rights to in the last few months.
The latest book lining up in the hopes of making young girls swoon is Fallen, the first in a four part series by Lauren Kate. As is becoming more and more common, Hollywood has snapped up the film rights before the novel hits the shelves (it’s out in the US this week), with Disney signing a deal to try and bring the tale to the silver screen.
This supernatural fantasy is about an alienated teen girl who finds herself torn between two attractive young men (nope, can’t see the Twilight parallels there at all). However what she doesn’t realise it that they are angels who have been battling over her soul for centuries. It’s easy to see why Disney likes it, as it certainly appears to have all the ingredients that have made the tales of Edward and Bella so popular. And with angels seen as the next big thing in young adult fiction, following the current wave of vampire and werewolf titles, it makes sense for the studio to jump in.
Now all I need is a plot for my teen fantasy novel? Obviously there needs to be a lovestuck girl, but vampires and werewolves are a bit passe. So how about a were-pire? Anyone wanna read a book about a teenage girl falling in love with a bloodsucker who turns into a wolf at the full moon? I’ll even chuck in an angel if you like, who can vie for the girl’s attention, and maybe a leprechaun too, just to make it seem a bit fresh and different. Come on Hollywood, there’s my pitch, who wants to give me money?
