Although Men In Black 3 is still in the relatively early stages of development, it appears Sony are already on the lookoout for new cast members to join the franchise. The LA Times reports that Josh Brolin is “being considered for a role that would have him donning the black suit and shades for the third installment of the sci-fi comedy franchise”.
The report speculates that he’s likely to be an MIB agent, saying “there’s been chatter in Hollywood development circles of a few possibilities: He could play a new single-monikered government agent, with Tommy Lee Jones’ Agent K passing the baton to Brolin’s character. Or he could play Agent K as a young man. Or something else entirely.” Now is it just me, or does that sound like they don’t have a frigging clue what the role is, and so just made some stuff up?
With Tropic Thunder writer Etan Cohen having only recently having been hired to write the script, it’s perhaps not surprising we don’t know what role Brolin may be up for, although adding another member to the already established team of Jones and Smith seems most likely. However as neither of those actors has officially signed up for the movie, this could be Sony’s way of suggesting to them that they’d better sign up soon, or they’ll find other people to replace them.
Apparently the studio wants to shoot MIB 3 next year, to fill a gap in their schedule and also reignite interest in the popular franchise, as at the moment their only real on-going biggie is Spider-man. However if they do want Brolin, they may have to work out some scheduling issues, as he’s already pencilled in to film True Grit and Cartel next year, not to mention promotional duties on Oliver Stone’s Wall Street sequel and Jonah Hex.
