It seems that Robert Luketic, the director behind Legally Blonde, 21 and The Ugly Truth, may be helming a new version of Robert Zemeckis’ 1980s action adventure, Romancing The Stone. Fox has been working on the remake for a while now, and already has a script from Eagle Eye’s Dan McDermott, however so far nobody’s stepped into the director’s chair.
Now Pajiba reports that Luketic is being lined up for the job, which is sure to thrill very few people, as even his successes seem to have had little to do with him, with only 21 showing any filmmaking panache. Luketic is also currently attached to the Babarella remake that Robert Rodriguez left a while ago. However with many thinking that Barbarella is a film that’s won’t ever come to fruition (it’s the sort of movie that seems like it’d be good for a remake, but it’s so idiosyncratic that it’s likely the studio will think twice about giving a new version the greenlight), Romancing The Stone may be the more likely option for Luketic.
The original 1984 version of Romancing The Stone saw a Joan Wilder (Kathleen Turner) heading off to Colombia to rescue her kidnapped sister, but ends up on a wild adventure with only soldier of fortune Jack Colton (Michael Douglas) to help her.
Incidentally the same Pajiba post mentions that Sony is planning a remake of the 1987 Goldie Hawn/Kurt Russell comedy, Overboard, about a spoiled rich woman who treats people like crap, but gets amnesia when she falls off her yacht. The man she’s failed to pay for work he’s done on her boat then says he’s actually her husband, and gets her to pose as his wife in order to trick her into paying him. Although the premise is a bit creepy, the film ain’t bad, although it was a flop on its release.
Apparently Sony want Katherine Heigl to star, although to be honest, it’d be rather nice to see Kate Hudson take on the role her mother Goldie once played, as she’s certainly made a career out of playing ditzy blondes.
