I suppose I ought to apologise for not putting this in the US box office update yesterday, but at the time we didn’t realise quite how impressively badly Transymania flopped!
The movie came out on Friday in the US on 1,007 screens and grossed an incredibly measly $274,000 to place 21st on the box office list. That means it was outgrossed by Couples Retreat, a film that was showing on less than half as many screens and which was released halfway through October. That should give you in idea of quite how badly Transylmania did. In fact with a per-screen average of only $272 dollars, it’s the lowest average take ever for a film opening on more than 1,000 screens, which is a record no film wants to have.
What this means is that due to awful marketing, including crap trailers that never really got to the film’s target audience and posters that made it look more like like a tween flick than a horror spoof, on average each screen showing Transylmania only got 30 people to pay to watch it over the entire weekend. So if we say there were probably three screenings of the film a day, that’s about three people per screen per showing.
Now that is an impressively epic fail, so Transylmania, we salute you.
