Earlier this year, Top Cow Comics announced plans to bring the graphic novel Alibi to the big screen, with Mandeville Entertainment producing. Well, now things are moving forward, as Twilight makers, Summit, have stepped in to co-produce the movie and bring it to cinemas, and they’ve even hired a writer.
It’s amazing the effect Twilight has had, as Summit used to be a relatively small fry operation, but it’s now picking up projects left, right and centre and turning itself into a proper little studio (it even distributes its own films in the US). They’ve hired John Hlavin to write the screenplay, who’s main big screen credit is the thriller Donkey Punch, but who’s also been hired for Underworld 4 and is developing a western called The Gunslinger at Warner (he’s also worked in TV, including as a story editor for The Shield).
Alibi itself is about a society man-about-town, whose high-profile life provides the perfect alibi for his secret twin brother, who works as a government assassin. While the makers hope for the same sort of success as another recent Top Cow adaptation, Wanted, this one is less about defying the laws of physics and more about covert espionage and action. It’s certainly a premise that could make for a great film, so lets hope it doesn’t get lost in development.
