Ice Cube has had a peculiar screen career, where it constantly seems as if he’s trying to find his niche. Having made his movie debut in 1991’s Boyz n the Hood, he’s tried comedy in the likes of Friday and Barbershop, action with xXx2 and Three Kings and even sci-fi in Ghosts Of Mars, but while he’s had a decent amount of success, he’s never really broken into the big time.
Now he’s planning to bring together his action and comedy personas in the hope that he can translate his minor success in each into somethng a bit bigger. THR reports that he’s hired Jason Mantzoukas to rewrite his planned new action-comedy, Ride Along, which will feature the former rapper as a rogue cop who tries to break off his sister’s engagement to an upper-crust white psychiatrist by inviting his future brother-in-law on a ride-along.
While the screenplay has already gone through a couple of drafts by Greg Coolidge, it’s hoped Mantzoukas can polish it up ready for the cameras. The movie is being put together by Ice Cube’s Cube Vision productions and New Line, the studio that’s also been involved in many of his other comedies. However whether this is the vehicle that will break Cube into the a-list is yet to be seen.
