Can this really be true? Is Hollywood really looking to remake a movie that they only last remade in 2005? Well, it appears that might be exactly what they’re planning with The Amityville Horror. Bloody Disgusting reports that even though Platinum Dunes’ version of the 1979 haunted house tale only arrived four years ago, the rights have now been taken by The Weinstein Brothers and their Dimension Films imprint, which is planning another go around for the story of newlyweds getting terrified in their haunted New England home.
Between them Platinum Dunes and Dimension are responsible for more of the current wave of Hollywood remakes than anyone else, so perhaps it isn’t surprising that they’re now planning on remaking each other’s film.
As the only thing that truly distinguishes Amityville from other haunted house horror tales is its true story angle, it’s perhaps not all that surprising that the Weinstein’s just want to use the name and probably slap it on a generic spooky home take in order to get brand recognition.
I’m half convinced that in a few years time there’ll only be 12 horror films and they’ll just get remade every year so that Hollywood doesn’t even have to vaguely consider doing anything original.
