It was starting to seem that we were going to be seeing ever more Shrek sequels for the rest of time, but according to USA Today, that’s not the case, as they say that next year’s Shrek Forever After will be the final Shrek movie, and will conclude the story started in the previous three films.
That said, it’s not like Dreamworks is completely giving up on the franchise, as a Puss In Boots spin-off is already in the works for 2011, and we wouldn’t be shocked if in a few years time they decided to make another Shrek movie, as it is currently a license to print money.
US Today also confirms that we’ll get our first look at the fourth Shrek film in a few weeks, as the first trailer will hit cinemas with Avatar in mid-December.
The plot of Shrek Forever is a mash-up of Brothers Grimm and It’s A Wonderful Life, with Shrek once more feeling like he’s lost his roar and is no longer the fearsome ogre he’s supposed to be. Fed up with being adored rather than feared, he makes a deal with Rumpelstiltskin, to see what would happen in Far, Far Away if he’d never existed, but ends up in a twisted world where he never met Fiona, Rumpelstiltskin is king and all his friends are in trouble.
Finally, USA Today premiered the first official photos from the film. There’s one above and to the right, while the other one is below. Click on them to see larger versions on the USA Today website. Shrek Forever After is in cinemas on July 9th, 2010.
