While Wes Craven has carefully hedged his bets over whether he’ll direct the upcoming Scream 4, saying he is waiting to see a script before he makes any decisions over whether to return to the franchise, it appears he may be closer to signing up than he’s previously suggested.
Neve Campbell, who originally wasn’t returning to the franchise but is now fully onboard Scream 4, has been talking to Blackbook, and says that she’s “pretty sure at this stage that Wes [Craven] is back on board to direct.” However she may be talking a little prematurely, because even if Craven is loosely attached but waiting for a script, he won’t have seen it yet.
Even Neve herself hasn’t seen the script, because the actors had to sign up first, so that writer Kevin Williamson knew which of the original Scream characters he could include in the new movie. Because of Campbell’s initial reluctance to sign up, Williamson started writing the Scream 4 screenplay without Neve’s Sidney Prescott featuring at all, despite his initial plans having always included her, but now that she’s signed up, he’s been able to put her back into the movie.
Scream 4, which is planned as the first part of a new trilogy, that will take the action back to Woodsboro and see a mix of old and new characters. The movie is due to start filming in the Spring, and it’s looking more and more likely that Wes Craven will indeed be directing.
Incidentally, Campbell has apparently been living in London for the past five years with her British husband, Jon Light. Who knew?
