Here’s a good idea, even if so far it’s only available in the US. There are a lot of people out there who are just getting into the Blu-ray game and buying their first discs. However with HD discs being pretty expensive, especially compared to DVD, upgrading you old DVDs is a bit cost-prohibitive. Well, to try and make it a bit cheaper and encourage people to get hold of their back catalogue on Blu-ray, Warner has launched DVD2Blu.com.
The idea is that for between $7.95 and $9.95 you can upgrade your DVD copy of a film to Blu-ray. You sign up through the site, send your DVDs off to Warner and they send back a Blu-ray version. Although the cost is still going to add up quickly if you want to upgrade a lot of discs, it’s still a pretty good idea. The main drawback at the moment is the relatively limited range of titles, with only 55 movies eligible at the moment.
The DVD2Blu programme followed the success of Warner’s Red2Blu, which allowed people to swap their defunct HD DVD titles for Blu-ray one (for a price). At the moment there’s no news on whether this is coming to the UK, but we can see a lot of people wanting to use it, so let’s hope it does.
