Justin Theroux seem keen to work his way through all the jobs Hollywood has to offer. He first made his name as an actor, directed dedication in 2007, co-wrote and produced Tropic Thunder and has also worked on the screenplay for Iron Man 2.
THR now reports he has a new writing assignment, as he’s been brought on board to pen a draft of Space Invader, the astronaut romantic-comedy that currently has Will Arnett attached to star. While Mike Lisbe and Nate Reger wrote the original script and sold it to Fox a couple of years ago, Theroux has now been brought in to give his take on the story of Doug, a janitor at NASA who suspects that his astronaut girlfriend is cheating on him in orbit with an all-round American hero space-walker. As a result Doug decides to find a way to get himself to the International Space Station, to make sure the two aren’t getting up to anything they shouldn’t.
It’s also reported that Theroux may direct the film, although at the moment he’s only attached to write.
While it might be hard to get this one in front of the camera, simply because it’ll cost a lot to make but doesn’t have traditional blockbuster trappings, it sounds like a fun film, and Will Arnett definitely deserves some good star vehicles. Personally I’m just grateful this isn’t an adaptation of the Space Invaders computer game.
