Following his Best Actor win at the Venice Film Festival, the Oscar buzz has been growing around Colin Firth’s performance in A Single Man (and as the trailer informs us, some people think Julianne Moore is in with a shot too). Unfortunately though, while this trailer makes A Single Man look like a quality, very good looking movie, it tells you bugger all about the film itself. But then, that’s what often happens with movies that have gay themes, but which the distributor is hoping will have mainstream appeal – the marketing department doesn’t know what to do with it.
However while you wouldn’t know it from the trailer, Firth plays Geroge Falconer, who’s just lost his lover, and is struggling to get through each day, despite the consoling support of his friend, Charlotte (Moore), and the distraction provided by a young student (Nicholas Hoult) who seems drawn to him. The film, based on the novel by Christopher Isherwood and directed by fashion designer Tom Ford, is in UK cinemas in February, although expect a few Oscar nominations for the film to come along before then.
