It seems that in a couple of years time, every movie Hollywood makes will be based on either a toy or a board game. In the works we’ve got Transformers 3, Monopoly, Cluedo, Battleship, Masters Of The Universe, Ouija, Lego, Stretch Armstrong, Barbie, Viewmaster and goodness knows what else, and now after rumours suggesting it would happen, Sony has bought the rights to the board game Risk.
Variety reports that the studio has purchased the adaptation rights from Hasbro, so that they can bring the game’s quest to annex the territories of the world to the big screen. However, as with Battleship, it’s difficult to see why you need to buy the rights to the board game, as surely they could have made their own world domination movie and not handed any of the cash to Hasbro?
Sony’s Doug Belgard commented, “The strategic thinking and the tactical gambles that players must take in the game are what make Risk a classic, thoroughly engaging game. Those elements translated into an action-packed, thrilling story are what will make this a uniquely exciting movie.”
Hmm, it seems like one of those statements where even the person speaking is stretching to explain exactly why it’s a good ideas, other than it has name recognition.
So when are we getting Rubik’s Cube: The Movie? Or perhaps Ker-Plunk: The Motion Picture?
