It’s been a full decade since The Blair Witch Project hit cinemas, making hundreds of millions of dollars and terrifying audiences around the globe. Since then there’s been a rush job sequel, Bood Of Shadows, which destroyed the franchise before it has a chance to get going, while the co-directors of the original, Eduardo Sanchez and Daniel Myrick, have done very little else of note.
However, while The Blair Witch Project 2 was made without their involvement (they turned down the opportunity to direct it), it looks like Sanchez and Myrick are now interested in going back into the woods. Sanchez has been talking to The Toronto Star, with the article revealing that, “They’re (the directors) now at the point where they’re ready to do a Blair Witch 3, once again sharing writing and directing. They’d pick up from where the original left off, pretending Blair Witch 2 never happened…They’ve worked up a treatment for a new story, which would involve original cast members Heather Donahue, Joshua Leonard and Michael C. Williams, albeit in smaller roles.”
Sanchez says that, “We’re at the step where we’re about to pitch to Lionsgate, which owns the movie rights now. It’s pretty much up to them. They can completely squash it or greenlight it.”
With fake found footage thriller Paranormal Activity tearing up the US box office, it’s little wonder the directors of Blair Witch think the time might be right, and while the duo spent several years running from their success because they didn’t want to be seen as one-trick ponies, as they’ve done nothing since that anyone’s wanted to watch, maybe it’s time for them to go back into the woods.
