Things are gearing up on the remake of the 1986 comedy, Short Cicuit, with Variety annoucing that Steve Carr has been lined up to direc the movie. Although he’s not exactly a well known name, Carr is coming off a hit with Paul Blart: Mall Cop and he was also behind Daddy Day Care (although the less said about his work on crappy comedy sequels Next Friday, Dr. Dolittle 2 and Are We Done Yet?, the better).
It’s not exactly news that suggests this new version of Short Circuit will be a work of genius, although there’s still plenty to play with in the idea of a military robot that develops a conscience and personality after being hit by lightning. While in the original the robot, Johnny 5, bonds with a young woman played by Ally Sheedy, the remake will go where all modern family films head, which is to have him helping a young boy and his fractured family.
Although the fact that Dan Milano, of Robot Chicken fame, wrote the script, it’s difficult not to feel this one is headed straight for the instantly forgettable pile.
