With filming on the third Twilight movie, Eclipse, having already begun before the second one is in cinemas, it was inevitable they’d have to change directors. So while Chris Weitz (About A Boy, The Golden Compass), is handling the second movie, New Moon, David Slade (30 Days Of Night) is currently directing the third.
That leaves the question of who will helm the final Twilight movie, Breaking Dawn? At the moment, that movie hasn’t been officially greenlit, as the makers of the film, Summit, are waiting to see the box office results of New Moon to ensure making a fourth movie is worthwhile. However with Twilight fever still gripping teens the world over, it’s pretty much a formality that Breaking Dawn will go ahead.
At the moment there’s no official word on who will be directing Twilight 4, but in an interview with THR, Chris Weitz was asked whether he’d be back to direct the fourth and final movie. His response was that, “No official offer has been made. The fans have been enthusiastic about the footage and the trailer, and the studio responds to that by feeling good about me. We’ll have to see how people feel about the entire movie, not only the studio but the fans, before the verdict is out whether I direct Number 4. David Slade is doing a great job on the third film, and by the time that comes out, he’ll be the flavor of the moment.”
It’s a bit of a non-denial denial, suggesting there has been some talk, but that he’s not allowed to say anything official yet. It’s also true that the film is likely to go into production before David Slade has finished work on Eclipse, leaving the way open for Weitz to direct Breaking Dawn.
Although work on the final Twilight movie is still at an early stage, Summit wants the movie in cinemas during the summer of 2011, so expect plenty of official announcements to come very soon after New Moon hits cinemas on November 20th.
