Director Gus Van Sant and author Bret Easton Ellis (of American Psycho and Rules Of Attraction fame) are teaming up to write a film about the double suicides of artists Theresa Duncan and Jeremy Blake.
The movie will be based on a Vanity Fair articles titled, ‘The Golden Suicides’, by Nancy Jo Sales, which told the story of Dunan and Blake, who were a popular couple of the New York and Venice, California art scenes, who embraced modern technology, with her designing videogames for girls and him making kaleidoscopic digital images shown on plasma screens.
However they started to become increasingly paranoid, with both of them beginning to believe that government and religious organisations were conspiring against them. Theresa eventually killed herself, while Jeremy followed suit a week later.
At the moment Van Sant is only involved as a writer, but it’s certainly a story that captures a lot of the themes he’s explored in the likes of Last Days and Elephant, and so it’s more than possible he may end up behind the camera on the movie. Van Sant is currently preparing to shoot the coming of age drama, Restless, so it’s unlikely he’ll make a final decision about whether to direct The Golden Suicides until that film has wrapped.
