Hollywood loves body-swapping comedies, but none has seen such enduring popularity as Freaky Friday. The 1976 original saw a young Jodie Foster ending up in Barbara Harris’ body and vice versa, while a 2003 remake got Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan to swap places. Both films were big hits, and so Tinsel Town has decided they want more!
Mary Rodgers, author of the 1973 book on which the Freaky Friday films were based, has recently released a follow-up, Freaky Monday (co-written with Heather Rach), which was released in May. Now CBS Films has stepped up to buy the film rights to the book, which sees a smart but insecure girl magically switching bodies with her sympathetic junior high English teacher for a day – so not a massive departure from the original then.
There’s no news on writers, stars or a director yet, although we can see this one being put on the fast-track, as it wouldn’t cost a lot to make and with its brand recognition should see the film doing decent box office.
