I’m never quite sure if the stars of The Hills are geniuses or just as annoying and superficial as they come off on screen. They’ve basically turned their entire lives into an act, so you never know what’s real and what isn’t, and they also have an amazing ability to generate publicity for themselves and make ridiculous amounts of money.
Now Variety reports that Hills star Lauren Conrad has managed to sell the screen rights to her bestselling novel, L.A. Candy, which is informed by her experiences and tells the story of Jane Roberts, a teen who heads to Hollywood, quickly finds fame as a reality series star and then has to deal with the ramifications of living a fishbowl life.
The rights have been bought by Marty Bowen and Wyck Godfrey, producers of Twilight, who are obviously hoping for a teen flick franchise, as Conrad has said she plans to write two more books about Roberts. Although there’s been speculation that Conrad’s book is ghost-written, we’ve always suspected she’s far smarter than people give her credit for, and so we wouldn’t be at all surprised if it is her own work. According to the producers of the film version of L.A. Candy, it was Lauren herself that came up with the “structure of how to tell the story (on film) in an interesting fashion that was separate and apart from the book”, which convinced them to buy the screen rights.
The next step is for the producers to hire some writers, although there’s no news on when they hope to get the film version of L.A. Candy into cinemas.
