There seem to be two Stephen Gaghans. One writes complex and politically savvy movies like Traffic and Syriana, while the other scripts dodgy pics like Rules Of Engagment and the Katie Holmes thriller, Abandon. However we’re hoping it’s the first one who’s announced that he’s writing and directing a currently untitled new action thriller, with Lionsgate agreeing to pick up the worldwide distribution rights on the film.
THR is reporting that the new film will be about an elite deep cover operative who becomes a Brooklyn beat cop and fights a global organization. Gaghan is working on the script with author Shannon Burke, who also helped with the screenplays for both Syriana and Abandon.
To be honest the basic plot doesn’t sound that exciting, but if Gaghan can throw in some of the grit and nous he showed with Traffic and Syriana, it could be pretty good. Gaghan is planning to film the movie next spring, although no release date has yet been set.
