So we can cover as many films as possible, we thought we’d give you these quick updates of some of the smaller film announcements…
While it’s been in the works for ages, Bryan Singer has now officially confirmed that he’s planning to direct Jack The Giant Killer. Written by Live Free Or Die Hard’s Mark Bomback, the fantasy adventure is a new take on the classic fairytale, with Jack setting off into the land of the giants to rescue a kidnapped princess. Singer is also attached to a new film version of Battlestar Galactica, as well as a remake of Excalibur, but Jack The Giant Killer is the most likely to be his next film. (Source: Heat Vision)
Dennis Hopper, Scott Caan, Tricia Helfer and J.K. Simmons have signed up to star in A Beginner’s Guide To Endings, which is due to be directed by first timer Jonathan Sobol. The film is about three brothers who, upon learning they only have a few days left to live, set off to reverse a lifetime of mistakes. Caan will be one of those brothers, while Hopper and Simmons will be his father and uncle respectively. Helfer’s will be Caan’s girlfriend, who has a dangerous past. Filming on the movie is due to start at the end of October in upstate New York. (Source: THR)
The cast of Jay Roach’s Dinner For Schmucks has grown again, with Devil Wears Prada actress Stephanie Szostak joining Steve Carell, Paul Rudd, Zach Galifianakis and Lucy Punch in the film. The movie, which is based on the French film Le diner de cons, is about the most pathetic guy ever to be invited to another man’s weekly dinner party. Szostak will play Julie, the girlfriend of Rudd’s character. Filming on the movie is due to begin soon, for release next summer. (Source: THR)
Jamie Alexander and Colm Feore have joined the cast of the upcoming comic book blockbuster, Thor, which is due to be directed by Kenneth Branagh. Alexander will play Sif, a skilled Asgardian warrior who can fight as well as any man. She is also one of Thor’s many loves. Feore meanwhile will be a villain, although the studio hasn’t released any more info on his role than that. They’ll join Chris Hemsworth as the mighty Thor himself, Tom Hiddleston as the villainous Loki and Natalie Portman as the film’s main love interest, Jane Foster. The story will revolve around Norse god Thor being sent to Earth as punshiment for reigniting an ancient war, only to have to save the human race after Loki sends the dark forces of Asgard to invade the planet (Source: THR)
Tom Twyker, director of Run Lola Run, who’s been having a bit of an English language adventure in the last few years with the likes of Heaven, Perfume and The International, is heading back to Germany to make Drei, his first film foreign language film in nearly a decade. Drei is described as a Berlin set love triangle tragicomedy. Twyker is also working on an adaptation of the bestselling novel Cloud Atlas with the Wachowski brothers, as well film version of Dave Egger’s book about a Sudanese refugee, What Is The What.
