There’s very little movie news around today, and the reason for that is that over the weekend Hollywood put everything on hold for the Primetime Emmmy, US TV’s equivalent of the Oscars. So instead of making announcements and letting us know what was going on in the movies, everyone just slapped each other on the back over what they’ve been doing on the small screen.
It must be said that television actors must be getting pretty frustrated with all the movie stars who are now moving over to TV, as they’re not only taking many of the plum jobs, but they’ve also started winning all the Emmys. Alec Baldwin, Brendan Gleeson, Toni Collette, Glenn Close and Jessica Lange all picked up awards for their TV work, and it shouldn’t be ingnored either that other movie star nominees included Drew Barrymore, Signourney Weaver, Shirley MacLaine, Holly Hunter, Sally Field and Kevin Bacon, all of whom have decided they don’t mind appearing on the small screen if the role is right.
Only a few years ago it would have been shocking to see so many famous movie names on the Emmy shortlist, simply because it used to be seen that going on TV was an admission your career was in freefall, but that’s all changed now.
