The weekend US box office results are in and four new movies have hit the top 10, with the new 3D family flick, Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs, coming out as the winner. In fact it pretty much trounced the rest of the field, taking over $30 million, nearly three times as much as the next closest film, Steven Soderbergh’s new movie, The Informant, which took $10.5 million. The bizarrely titled Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs is yet another movie that’s benefitted greatly from appearing in 3D cinemas, with audiences willing to pay more for the extra dimension.
With Cloudy and Soderbergh’s Matt Damon starring The Informant topping the list, last week’s winner, I Can Do Bad All By Myself, had to make do with third place, adding another $10 million to its tally. After that it was the other two new entries, neither of which performed to expectations. In third was the Aaron Eckhart and Jennifer Aniston romance, Love Happens, which suffered very bad reviews and ended up making a so-so $8.45 million.
However the big loser was Jennifer’s Body, starring Megan Fox as a schoolgirl with a demon inside her. Despite middling reviews, the film had attracred a lot of attention and with the presence of the alluring Ms. Fox, many had expected the movie to do great business, but it only managed to scare up $6.8 million on its opening weekend.
The rest of the top 10 were all holdovers, none of which did particularly well.
