Six months ago he was just a bit part player who’d mainly worked on TV, but after The Hangover, Zach Galifianakis has become a major star and had his pick of scripts. He’s already signed up to star opposite Robert Downey Jr. in Due Date, he’s been working on the new HBO comedy series Bored To Death and will also be appearing in Dinner For Schmucks and The Hangover 2.
Now he’s got a new film in the pipeline, It’s Kind Of A Funny Story, which would team him with two of the greatest rising talents in Hollywood, Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, the co-directors of Half Nelson and Sugar. The film, based on Ned Vizzini’s novel, is about a teenage boy, who after a bout of depression ends up on the adult ward of a mental institution, where he meets a lot of quirky adults, as well as an offbeat teen girl. Although that plot synopsis would make you cringe in anyone else’s hands, Boden and Fleck are two people you can really imagine pulling it off.
Galifanakis is in talks to play one of the major adult roles in the film, while THR is reporting that Emma Roberts may be the quirky teen girl in the film.
Shooting on the movie is due to start later this year, once Galifianakis’ has finished work on Due Date.
