A few days ago, Guillermo Del Toro hinted on TheOneRing.net that he was about to announce an important deal, that had something to do with the letter ‘D’. While many speculated that this would be that he was going to direct the comic adaptation Deadman, this seemed unlikely as it’s only just been announced that Danish director Nikolaj Arcel would be helming that movie, with Del Toro producing. He’d also have little time to make such a major film before shooting on The Hobbit is due to start.
However it’s turned out ‘D’ actually referred to a new production company, Disney Double Dare You Films. He’s signed a deal with the House Of Mouse to set up the Double Dare You cartoon label, which is designed to produce darker animated movies that are meant to thrill audiences. Del Toro will produce all the films made through the new label, and will also direct several of them.
At the moment Disney is desparate to attract more male moviegoers, as while its family division has the young girl market sewn up, with everything from Disney Princesses to Hannah Montana, it’s had more difficulty attracting boys, but with things like Double Dare You and buying Marvel, they’re hoping to change that.
The first film Del Toro is hoping to make under the new deal is Trollhunters, based on his own idea. He also offered the rather cryptic comment that, all the Double Dare You films were tied together by “one feature that shall remain secret, but that you shall soon be very familiar with.”
It all sounds pretty cool, and will hopefully produce some fun films.
