Josh Hartnett and his tiny eyes have signed up for Gunslinger, a movie which seems set to bring together two of cinema’s biggest current obssessions, revenge thrillers and apocalypses. He’ll play a man who, along with his brother, set out to kill the gang who murdered their parents, searching for them in the snowy wasteland of a post-apocalyptic America.
Chris Nahon, the man behind the recent Blood: The Last Vampire will be directing. We have to say that none of the above suggests we have a classic in the making, and nor does producer Mark Williams slightly dodgy statement that, “This story takes a unique and startling look at what might happen when the lawlessness of the Old West returns … but with better weapons.” Yes, because that’s what westerns have been lacking, more firepower. If John Wayne had just had a bazooka and rocket propelled grenades, it would have made the likes of Stagecoach and True Grit complete.
Gunslinger is due to start filming in Canada early next year. Expect it to slink into cinemas and then quickly disappear from memory sometime in late 2010 or early 2011.
