Up until now Disney hasn’t really tried to use CG to create one of their classic fairytale movies (Chicken Little doesn’t count as it was completely modernised), but that’s about to change with Rapunzel, which is an attempt to bring the feel of the studio’s hand-drawn efforts to a 3D CG environment. It’s apparently not only going for the same look, but will feature songs and various other classic elements that until now have been fairly rare in CG.
It’s now been announced that songstress Mandy Moore will be the one letting her long hair down and voicing the classic farytale character. THR’s Heat Vision blog is also reporting that Chuck star Zachary Levi has been cast in the movie as a dashing bandit. This is a bigger role than you might expect, as the film is reportedly a complete retooling of the classic tale, so that rather than concentrating on Rapunzel being stuck by herself in a tower and chucking her ridiculously long hair out of the window (which would be quite dull), it’ll see her escape and go on the run with Levi’s bandit, while being pursued by her captors.
Rapunzel, which will feature songs by Alan Menken (Beauty And The Beast, The Little Mermaid), is currently set for a Decembr 2010 release.
