It was only a few weeks ago that it was reported that Warner Bros was in the early stages of putting together a remake of the Michael J. Fox werewolf comedy, Teen Wolf. However it now appears that rather than a movie, what’s being planned is still a TV version, as THR is reporting that MTV has ordered a pilot episode for a potential series. The possible Teen Wolf TV series was apparently first announced as part of MTV’s production slate back in January, but the project has now inched a bit further towards getting on screen.
Presumably the new version will follow the plot of the film, where a teen has to deal with unusual puberty problems, when hair does indeed grow in unusual places, turning him into a werewolf. However while the film was a comedy, the new version is said to be more dramatic, with MTV stating that, “It has more of an American Werewolf in Paris feel to it. It’s a dramatic thriller with two best friends in the centre who provide a great comedy element: They are two very relatable characters on the outer circles of popular cliques.”
While the 1980s became Hollywood’s favoured era for remakes a couple of years ago, TV is certainly jumping of the bandwagon, with new small screen versions of Parenthood and V already in the works, and St. Elmo’s Fire and Heathers in the planning stages. However with Teen Wolf, it’s difficult to understand what the point is if they’re going to keep the name and then completely change the concept to a more dramatic series. Surely they might as well start over with a new name, as it’s not like anyone owns the copyright on werewolves.
