With his Halloween II hitting US cinemas this weekend, Rob Zombie has decided it’s a good time to announce what he’ll be up to to next. So is he going back to the horrifically gory yet original likes of The Devil’s Rejects and House Of 1000 Corpses? Nope, according to Variety he’s lined up yet another remake, so that following his two Halloween flicks he’ll be helming a new version of The Blob.
The 1958 original launched the career of Steve McQueen, but it is undoubtedly a slightly silly movie. It is fun though and to be honest there are a lot worse films out there to do a remake of. In the film an object from space crashes to earth, releasing a red blob that devours any human that comes into contact with it, feeding and growing until it threatens to take over the planet.
However we’re already slight perplexed, as Zombie has said that he’s formulated a new take on the movie, because, “My intention is not to have a big red blobby thing – that’s the first thing I want to change. That gigantic Jello-looking thing might have been scary to audiences in the 1950s, but people would laugh now.” So basically it sounds like he’s trying to make The Blob, but without a blob, although he won’y say what he’s having instead.
Rob intends to write the script while he’s on tour this autumn (yes, he hasn’t completely given up being a musician), with production starting in the spring.
While it is slightly odd, we’re kind of intrigued by what Zombie will do with The Blob, especially as he’s working with a small enough budget that he’ll still have creative control. He’s said, “I’d been looking to break out of the horror genre, and this really is a science fiction movie about a thing from outer space. I intend to make it scary, and the great thing is I have the freedom once again to take it in any crazy direction I want to.” If Zombie’s previously movies are anything to go by, it certainly will go in crazy directions.
