Although at the moment it’s only a rumour, Aint It Cool News is reporting that the makers are considering shooting the whole of the third Batman movie in IMAX. In many ways this isn’t a big shock, as several of the big action sequences in The Dark Knight were done using proper IMAX film cameras (not IMAX digital, which doesn’t quite have the quality).
However if you’ve watched the featurettes on the Dark Knight Blu-ray, you’ll know the problems this caused, not least that there are only a few IMAX cameras in the world, they destroyed one of them, and their weight meant all new rigs had to be built to use them. Add to that they take longer to load, alter the framing of shots and various other considerations, and IMAX is certainly a tougher format to shoot in.
The results for the scenes in The Dark Knight were stunning, but it would make filming the third Batman movie a lot more expensive and complex (which is partly why so few feature films have ever used the process), although the results could be worth it. However at this point it’s apparently just something that’s under consideration.
Elswhere The Sun has said that Megan Fox has signed up to play Catwoman in the movie. Although it’s vaguely possible, we’d be willing to bet it isn’t true. It was inevitable that Fox would be linked to the role of Catowman at some point, so The Sun is probably just getting it out of the way first (particularly as if they wait too long it may turn out Catwoman isn’t even in Batman 3, which would spoil all their tabloid slavering).
At the moment everything is rumour and there’s been no official word on what’s happening with the next Batman movie (Christopher Nolan hasn’t even been officially announced as the director, although the assumption is that he’s coming back after Inception), so at the moment we’ll just have to live with these possible titbits.
