Golf is not exactly a game with in-built thrills that make it perfect to build movies around, but one of the few people who’ve done it successfully is Ron Shelton, who made the very entertaining Tin Cup with Kevin Costner in 1996 (Shelton seems a bit of a sports nut having covered baseball in Bull Durham, basketball in White Men Can’t Jump, and boxing in Play It To The Bone).
It now looks like he’s about to head back to the gols course for the comedy Q School, which he also co-wrote, with Dennis Quaid and Tim Allen attached to star. The film will be about the annual qualifying tournament where hundeds of aspiring professional golfers compete for a few limited spots on the following year’s PGA tour. Q School wil follow a group of these hopefuls as they battle it out, with both their balls and their personal lives ending up in the drink on the way.
We’re surprised that Costner isn’t up for this one, as he normally loves his sports movies, has had big success with Shelton on Tin Cup and Bull Durham and, to be blunt, doesn’t seem to be doing much else at the moment. Who knows, perhaps he’ll join the cast in the future.
