For the past couple of years Marvel has changed the way they do things. They used to just sell the rights to their characters to studios, which then went off on their own and made a movie (e.g. Spider-man, X-Men, Fantastic 4, Daredevil etc), but more recently they’ve putting together their own films together, which is what has allowed them to do the crossovers that will lead up to The Avenrgers.
One popular character that’s been conspicuous by its absence from talk about The Avengers is the Sub-mariner. The reason for this is that the rights were sold to Universal years ago, and they’ve been sitting on them, apparently unsure how to move forward. While many assumed a Sub-mariner movie was dead in the water after the studio completely stopped talking about it, that apparently isn’t true.
Collider has been talking to director Jonathan Mostow (Terminator 3), who’s the man now attached to the Sub-mariner movie, who told them a Sub-mariner superhero flick was still very much in development, but the sticking point was finding the right script, which they haven’t cracked yet. While it sounds like things are still a way off going beofre the cameras, it’s nice to know that Universal is still developing the film, as Sub-mariner could be turned into a very good movie.
