While the film world was shocked by the news of John Hughes’ death last week, it’s turned out to be remarkable timing for a group of people who’ve made a documentary about their search for the reclusive director of The Breakfast Club and Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.
Don’t You Forget About Me sees four friends going off to try and find the reclusive Hughes, who barely gave any interviews after pretty much leaving showbusiness behind in 1991. Along the way they manage talk to everyone from Ally Sheedy and Andrew McCarthy to Kevin Smith and Jason Reitman about the making of Hughes’ classic teen flicks and the effect they had.
According to Variety, major distribution deals are in the works for the film. The Canadian film’s future was uncertain until last week, however on the day after Hughes’ death the directors woke up to an e-mail from CNN requesting an interview and by noon the non-US rights to the documentary had been snapped up Alliance Films of Montreal, while a deal for American distribution is currently in the works.
Commenting on the deal, director Matt Austin-Sadowski (previously best known as an actor of Power Rangers: SPD) said, “He inspired me as a person, going through an awkward adolescence, as many people do. He took affairs of the heart very seriously, and no other director gave teenagers that sort of treatment at that time.” He added that he hopes both Hughes passing and the movie will translate in renewed interest in his movies, saying, “That’s what’s important to us. It’s not the deal. It’s not more exposure for us.”
