According to Variety, screenwriter John August has picked up the rights to Steve Hely’s book How I Became A Famous Novelist, with an eye to writing and potentially directing it for the silver screen. The book concerns a man who sets out to write an unabashedly commercial tome so he can be rich, famous and, most importantly, upstage his ex-girlfriend’s wedding.
August has compared the novel to the 1999 film Go, which he also scripted, saying, “Like Go, it’s about thinking you have the system all figured out, realising you don’t, then faking it.” Since his Go success, August has also written the Charlie’s Angels movies, as well as collaborating with Tim Burton on Big Fish, Charlie And The Chocolate Factory, Corpse Bride and the upcoming Frankenweenie, as well as directing and writing The Nines in 2007.
